Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these medications need to be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
