In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
